there are the 650s (with the fairing and clipons and taller gearing) which is better for track, and there is the standard unfaired sv650. Pre 2003 is carb with a different frame 2003+ Is fuel injected, the last version had optional ABS.
Some prefer carbs because it's easy to setup, some prefer EFI (Me so I don't have to deal with carb rebuilds)
Stock suspension is really BAD! The real question is whether you want to compete in CCS or not? Because then you have to build it to fit within the rules.. like a stock bike can run more classes... mine with different front end and brakes and full system exhaust can only run limited races, but it is setup to compete very well in those classes.
If want to race it's best to buy a race bike, because it will already come with suspension pieces and track things...
Example: I bought mine setup because I figured a $2k SV would require these items for the track Rear Shock $600+ Front End replacement or revalving $500+ Track Fiberglass $600+ plus brackets required for CCS (requires bottom fairing to hold all the engine oil in case of an engine failure) Rearsets $200 Power Commander III $275 Full system $700~ or even a slip on... M4 is the one to get on SV's Safety Wiring key items... Larger Radiator $500-800 to deal with summers Track Sliders $60-100
So you can probably do work arounds, like just springs and oil, another Suzuki stock shock and fix those pretty good.... and all of the others are optional.
Be careful some of the fastest track bikes have the wiring harness stripped so they can't be returned to the street, but dont require a key, this is lighter, and some track bikes will have a lighter rear subframe with everything already stripped.
Some ex-trackbikes will come with a box of spares, levers, rearsets, etc... mine only came with a lever, extra tank, 2 sets of slicks.
Feel free to give me a call to discuss it on the phone... Otherwise Dustin at AZTrackdays.com shop can really give you the specifics... I ran my bike by him and they had built and maintained it... It was more money but i figured it was less than me building up a bike by far.
