Pistols?
Mar 08th, 2010, 10:12pm

Hey gang, I'm finally getting around to signing on from Kuwait!

I like the new header...where is that picture of everyone jumping from?

Anyway, I have a question. I have a pistol that I carry for concealed carry (a small Kahr P-40) but I've been wanting a medium or full-size frame pistol for some time. Was looking for some suggestions?

Thanks for the flowers on the header. We were down the street from Alan's house. I am not sure if you met him yet or not.

It is great to hear from you. Hurry up and come back so we can ride again. That is me being selfish. I hope you are alright and safe over there.

Sorry I don't have any knowledge about pistols to suggest. Me being stupid about pistols have always kind of wanted a Desert Eagle or a Glock, but I have no clue what the hell I am talking about. I would think there would be a lot of people there that surround you that would know a lot more about it than me.

Write back soon. Like to hear from you.

Hey, glad to hear from you!

We were all hanging out doing some drills to get ready for the track.  We decided to get a group picture.  Josh has a super quick camera so someone suggested that Chris (the picture taker) try to take a picture of us jumping up in the air.  It's such a fast camera that he had enough shots to turn it into a video.

Good to hear from you guys too! I'd forgotten about the boards but lately I've been missing riding, and suddenly thought "man...i should post on there" :-P

It's pretty quiet here for the most part. they sent me to Afghanistan for a couple weeks a little while ago for one mission, but now I'm back in Kuwait. All the freeways out here are huge and wide-open, and there's no speed limit...it makes me cry for my bike :-P

Glock 23 medium .40cal
H&K anything..

There a number of dealers in town were you can rent the gun for 10-15 bucks and shoot to see what you like.. I really suggest this as the greatest gun might not be comfortable or hit you in the wrong place.

I'm a big fan of .40 cal, for the size/weight trade-off. What about the 1911's in .45 acp? They seem to be pretty popular with a lot of people

1911 are the Chevy 350 of old or a Harley of guns.. people buy them because they can spend 3k customizing them. The .45 round has good knock down but it travels slow, and you can't carry as many rounds.  It's very effective non-the less, it's not like we are talking about .380 caliber gun for home defense.

The only round I find overkill is the 10mm, .41magnum,.44magnum (revolver because the ammo is dumb down), .50 magnum  I've owned a Desert Eagle .44 Magnum, and shot the .50 caliber also.  They are very effective weapons but require Hornady or self loaded ammo which I use to do.  Nothing like a .44 round with 300grain (2x the weight of a 9mm and some .40 rounds) bullet shooting faster than a 9mm... for knock down or just plain blowing off body parts.

H&K makes a killer Nato .45 gun (expensive but accurate and ultra reliable)

The only effective gun is one you practice with and keep in good condition. I've shot some .45's which I definitely liked, but the newer .40 caliber ammo creates what is called "hydrostatic shock" which causes the person that is hit not to be able to pull the trigger of their gun, .45 caliber guns are too slow, 9mm aren't big enough,.40 mm can and 10mm is basically a .41 caliber round with extended gun powerder like a 10mm.  Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!

Good ammo is really key based on what you are facing....

When I suggested trying the guns out at the range you will find what is easiest for you to adapt to and be accurate.  The 10mm is too much kick for me to be accurate with multiple fast shots, I have friends that can shoot it just fine.  I prefer smaller guns with more ammo so the 9mm and .40 caliber fit that requirement better for me and fit my hand better typically.

ammo isn't too much of a concern, I've pretty much decided on .45, although i'll go to .40 if I absolutely have to. since I've already got a carry gun, this would just be for hiking and range shooting.

I like the Springfield XDm, but something in me wants an all-metal pistol like the 1911. I think, in the end, that's what I'll end up going with, something a little classier that I can hold on to for a long time and eventually pass down to my son.

we're going to the range this weekend, but aside from the cool stuff you guys can't shoot (MK-19, ftw  Shocked ) we don't get to shoot anything but the Beretta M-9 and the M-4. Sigh...

The Springfield's are excellent guns, don't discount them.
Plus check out the H&K ( You need to feel it in your hand to see the quality)

or there are tons of competition 1911's already modified you can purchase.

I /really/ like the look of that H&K, so much in fact that I might go with it over a regular 1911. thanks for the recommendation

The picture doesn't do any H&K justice.. you should shoot/disassemble/hold one... I shot their 9mm gas operated handgun and it didn't kick at all, just let me pull off 6 shots with an ultra tight grouping...

How far is the trigger pull on that? I'm looking for a short travel for tighter shot groupings. The kahr I have is a great little pistol but it's got a /really/ long trigger pull, which I'm not a fan of

The Kahr is a double action trigger is my guess, most 1911's are single action with that small pull but you must rooster the hammer or use the slide to rooster the hammer on a single action gun, so holstering a single action gun with one in the chamber is ....delicate and lots of trust is held in the safety.  when doing rapid firing or successive firing on your current gun you shouldn't have to release the trigger all the way to pull again for the 2nd shot, or at least on my glock it's that way so I can pull off quick succession of shots easily.

Some guns can be setup for both Double and single action but the initial pull of the hammer must be done by the trigger (Double action or pulling the slide back) or by pulling the hammer back manually and then using the short pull trigger (single action), plus with single action you have to decock the gun to release the hammer, on a double action you don't since the hammer isn't stuck back in the ready to hit, plus on double action guns the hammer is internal so nothing is showing to get hung up on your clothing or holster etc...

once again it's like a preference of caliber or brands of motorcycles.  people have their preferences.

if you want to do modification then a 1911 will let you install an ultralight trigger or an adjustable trigger...or buy a Match 1911 pistol that already has the modifications..

yeah, the Kahr is DAO, and it doesn't have a manual safety, so I think it's engineered that way to prevent accidental firing. All of our sidearms here (including my M9 beretta) are Single/Double action, with the single action being activated either by a manual hammer c o c k (<--to avoid the filter saying "rooster") or racking the slide back. I've found that by practicing my trigger squeeze I have a lot more consistent shot grouping. for a personal weapon though I want a s/d action minimum, DAO isn't any fun to shoot.

Slightly unrelated:
I used to think the beretta was an inaccurate piece of crap, because that's what everyone in the Army says, but then we went through some training with a MSG who had just retired from the infantry as a sniper, and he fixed our fundamentals, now I can shoot that thing like a pro! I had no idea it was that accurate or that my fundamentals were that poor. Unfortunately the Army doesn't teach very good pistol marksmenship, but this guy really set us straight. Everyone's scores in our unit jumped way up.
